Once the concrete begins to set up, they run over it with a "power trowel", which is powered by a gas engine and has 4 fan blades that spin on the cement. Despite how this picture makes it look, it doesn't spin very fast - only about 80 rpm. For this first pass they use magnesium blades, which they tell me opens up the concrete's surface and allows water to escape.
