The Cilleyville Bog Bridge


A few miles east of us, downstream on the river that abuts our property, the Cilleyville Bog Bridge spans the same river.





The 53-foot-long bridge was built in 1887 (for $522!)



In 1959, NH State Route 11 was opened, the bridge was bypassed. it was closed to vehicular traffic, and maintenance ceased. In 1982 the roof collapsed and was replaced, and by 1997 the bridge had deteriorated so badly that it was closed even to foot traffic.



To prevent the bridge from collapsing into the river, steel beams were threaded thru the bridge to support it's weight for the indefinite future.



Restoration work was begun in 2002, and by early 2003 the bridge could once again support itself.
