Deck Truss Bridge - June '04

Built north bulkhead
Construction complete!

I built the bulkhead from 6 layers of overlapped RR ties, all pinned together with lengths of 1/2" rebar driven thru all layers and at least 12" into the dirt below.
This pic shows 4 layers in place... I need more ties!

I trimmed and angled the ties with a chainsaw.

There's minimal footing between the left wall's base and the stream (see above pic), so I added an outrigger (pointing toward you... maybe it's an "inrigger") to provide stability. The outrigger is notched and pinned (with rebar) into the wall, pinned into the dirt at the near end, and will eventually be buried, so it will provide very solid support. This pic also shows the left wall's 3 pieces of rebar ready to be driven into place.

Once the bulkhead was completed I did some final leveling on the bridge, which (now that it's fully assembled) weighs several hundred pounds and requires a small pneumatic jack for even small lifting.

The north bulkhead, completed. I dumped all the cut RR tie ends, as well as a bunch of other construction debris, into the hole to be buried by fill.
